"Drug addiction can be treated, but it is not simple. Because addiction is a chronic disease, people cannot simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients need long-term or repeated care to stop using completely and recover their lives. Addiction treatment must help the person stop using drugs, stay drug-free, and be productive in the family, at work, and in society. Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior, and no single treatment is right for everyone. People need quick access to treatment, and effective treatment addresses all of the patient’s needs, not just drug use. Staying in treatment long enough is critical, treatment plans must be reviewed and modified to fit changing needs, and treatment should address other possible mental disorders. Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective. Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, and programs should test patients for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases while teaching ways to reduce the risk of these illnesses. People within the criminal justice system may need additional treatment services to treat drug use disorders effectively."
