Scientific Notation

Quantitative Problem Solving in Natural Resources / Working with Numbers

"Scientific notation allows the mantissas and powers of ten in a calculation to be handled separately. In the forest-fire example, parcel area, timber volume, and timber price can be expressed as powers of ten, multiplied, and combined to estimate the value of standing timber. This approach reduces errors involving large numbers and provides a transparent ballpark result."
