Ideas in this flowchart

  • Flag-controlled while loop in C
  • A Boolean flag determines whether the loop continues.
  • The flag is used instead of an expression to control continuation.
  • In C, zero is treated as false and any non-zero numeric value as true.
  • An integer variable can act as an implicit Boolean flag.
  • The value 1 represents true, while 0 represents false and terminates the loop.
  • Code Sample 17.2 demonstrates a flag-controlled while loop.
  • The iteration variable i is initialized to 1.
  • The flag is initialized to 1.
  • The while loop continues while flag is true.
  • Each iteration performs an action and increments i.
  • When i becomes greater than 10, the flag is set to 0.

"Another common use case for a while loop is a flag-controlled loop in which we use a Boolean flag rather than an expression to determine if a loop should continue or not. Recall that in C, zero is treated as false and any non-zero numeric value is treated as true. We can thus create an implicit Boolean flag by using an integer variable and setting it to 1 for true and 0 for false (when we want the loop to terminate). An example can be found in Code Sample 17.2.\n\n1 int i = 1;\n\n2 int flag = 1;\n\n3 while(flag) {\n\n4 //perform some action\n\n5 i++; //iteration\n\n6 if(i>10) {\n\n7 flag = 0;\n\n8 }\n\n9 }\n\nCode Sample 17.2.: Flag-controlled While Loop in C"
