Ideas in this flowchart

  • Key strength of the study: using real-world clinical data to characterize insulin requirements during pregnancy
  • The data came from women with GDM using a rapid insulin titration protocol
  • The protocol acted like a homeostatic mechanism to adjust basal insulin doses to individual requirements
  • This created a unique dataset for analyzing insulin requirements throughout pregnancy
  • Small-scale data collection enabled high-fidelity capture of serial measurements
  • The captured data included fasting glucose measurements and insulin dose adjustments
  • The longitudinal data enabled evaluation of gestational insulin requirements over time
  • This evaluation is not currently possible using large routinely collected datasets in the UK

"A key strength of this study is the use of real-world clinical data from women with GDM who have used a rapid insulin titration protocol, which acts like a homeostatic mechanism to adjust basal insulin dose to meet their requirements. This has provided a unique dataset for the analysis of insulin requirement throughout pregnancy. Data collection on a small scale permitted high-fidelity capture of serial fasting glucose measurements and insulin dose adjustments throughout pregnancy, allowing for the evaluation of gestational insulin requirements over time, something not currently possible in large routinely collected datasets in the UK."
