Ideas in this flowchart

  • Factors associated with post-COVID-19 condition (PCC)
  • Organ system-specific models identified 23 acute-phase symptoms associated with PCC.
  • The final multivariable model identified demographic and acute-phase factors associated with PCC.
  • The model was adjusted for sex, age group, and obesity.
  • Demographic factors associated with higher PCC risk
  • Older age of 50 years or more was associated with higher PCC risk (aOR 1.62; 95% CI 1.18–2.21).
  • Obesity was associated with higher PCC risk (aOR 1.64; 95% CI 1.07–2.50).
  • Acute-phase symptoms remaining associated with PCC after adjustment
  • Cognitive symptoms included fatigue, memory difficulties, and concentration difficulties; memory difficulties had the strongest association (aOR 5.80).
  • Respiratory and chest symptoms included chest tightness and dyspnea.
  • Sensory and neurologic symptoms included olfactory dysfunction and numbness or paresthesia.
  • Cardiac and mental health symptoms included palpitations, anxiety disorder, and depressive symptoms.
  • The estimate for numbness or paresthesia was imprecise because of the small number of exposure counts.
  • Table 1 presents final multivariable logistic regression models for PCC, Phases I and II, and persistent PCC from 2021–2024.

"In organ system-specific models, 23 acute-phase symptoms across multiple organ systems remained associated with PCC (Supplementary Table S7b).\n\nIn the final multivariable model (Table 1), older age ≥ 50 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.62; 95% CI 1.18–2.21) and obesity (aOR, 1.64; 95% CI 1.07–2.50) were associated with a higher risk of PCC. Among acute-phase symptoms, fatigue (aOR, 1.81; 95% CI 1.29–2.67), memory difficulties (aOR, 5.80; 95% CI 3.10–10.97), concentration difficulties (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI 1.19–2.52), chest tightness (aOR, 1.93; 95% CI 1.12–3.32), dyspnea (aOR, 1.76; 95% CI 1.10–2.83), olfactory dysfunction (aOR, 2.03; 95% CI 1.51–2.75), numbness or paresthesia (aOR, 4.71; 95% CI 1.34–16.56), palpitations (aOR, 2.18; 95% CI 1.27–3.77), anxiety disorder (aOR, 2.28; 95% CI 1.03–5.01) and depressive symptoms (aOR, 4.96; 95% CI 1.03–23.90) remained associated with PCC after adjustment for sex, age group and obesity. The aOR estimate for numbness or paresthesia was based on small number of exposure counts and was therefore imprecise.\n\nTable 1 Final Multivariable Logistic Regression Models of Factors Associated With Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC), Phases I, II and Persistent PCC (2021–2024)."
