And today, five incredible facts about Europa, the moon that might harbor life. Europa is Jupiter's smallest Galilean moon. And at first glance, it appears almost peaceful, smooth, quiet, brilliantly white. But beneath that frozen surface lies one of the most extraordinary environments in the entire solar system. Europa is hiding an ocean. a global liquid saltwater ocean sitting beneath an icy crust estimated to be between 10 and 30 kilometers thick. That ocean is believed to be around 100 kilometers deep, containing more liquid water than all of Earth's oceans combined. And that ocean has been liquid for billions of years. Kept warm not by the sun, Europa receives very little sunlight, but by the same tidal forces that make its neighbor Io so volcanically violent. In a discovery that electrified the scientific world, the Hubble Space Telescope detected enormous water vapor plumes erupting from Europa's South Pole, geysers shooting material from the ocean directly into space. Europa isn't just hiding an ocean. It is venting it into the void. And we could potentially sample it without ever drilling through the ice. Here on Earth, we once believed life required sunlight. Then we discovered hydrothermal vents on the deep ocean floor, superheated cracks in the sea floor where life thrives in total darkness under crushing pressure. If life can exist there, the question becomes unavoidable. What might be living around the hydrothermal vents on Europa's ocean floor? Europa has liquid water. It has a rocky sea floor. It has a source of heat. It has the chemical ingredients that life requires. every single box that we know life needs to exist. Europa ticks. It is not a question of whether life could exist there. It is a question of whether we have the courage to go and look. NASA is going. The Europa Clipper spacecraft launched in 2024 and is currently making its way toward Jupiter. When it arrives, it will conduct dozens of close flybys of Europa, studying its ocean, its ice shell, its plumes, and its potential habitability. If Europa Clipper flies through one of those water plumes, it may be able to detect organic molecules, the chemical building blocks of life, directly from Europa's ocean without ever touching the surface. We may be just years away from the most significant discovery in the history of science. That's our five facts. If Europa just gave you chills, smash that like button and subscribe for a new video every week. Drop your next topic in the comments. I'll see you there.
