At a recent conference in Italy called Apophis, T minus 3 years, we learned a lot more about the asteroid spectacle that is expected in 2029, where about 90% of the world's population, 7.6 billion people will witness Apophis fly by the Earth with their naked eyes. This is the first time in human history where we've been able to predict an asteroid visibly flying by the Earth. At its closest, the asteroid that is just about bigger than the Empire State Building will pass 31,000 kilometers above the North Atlantic, significantly closer than our geostationary satellites. And the craziest part to me is that this will not be brief, and naked eye visibility will last for about 7 hours on April 13th.
