Most people don't understand just how far away the moon really is. To show you the real distance, imagine Earth is a basketball. At this scale, the moon would be a tennis ball. Now, guess how far away they should be? You might think this distance, maybe. For reference, the International Space Station is basically here. So keep going. At roughly this distance, you could fit five Earths in between. Still not there. At this distance, now 15 Earths. My arms do not stretch this far. Still not there. You You can fit every other planet in our Solar System between Earth and the moon, most of the time, because the moon's orbit isn't a perfect circle. It's an ellipse. At the closest point, you could fit 29 Earths in there. At the farthest point, you could fit 32 or every single other planet. With a basketball and a tennis ball, your arms would need to be 7.7 meters long. That's taller than four people. But the moon is drifting away. Where's it going? To find out, follow along.
