"This is the largest 3D map of the universe ever created. And every single dot you're looking at is not a star. It's an entire galaxy. A galaxy filled with hundreds of billions of stars, planets, and perhaps even worlds we'll never know about. Now here's the crazy part. What you're seeing isn't just a map of space. It's also a map of time. Some of these galaxies are so far away that their light began its journey more than 10 billion years ago. In other words, this map allows us to look billions of years into the past. To build it, nearly 900 researchers from around the world spent 5 years collecting data using an instrument called DESI, located in Arizona. Every clear night, DESI uses 5,000 robotic fiber-optic eyes to scan the sky, measuring the positions of distant galaxies with incredible precision. The original goal was ambitious: map 34 million galaxies and quasars. Instead, DESI exceeded expectations. It observed more than 47 million galaxies and quasars, along with millions of stars from our own galaxy, creating the most detailed 3D view of the cosmos ever assembled. But this map wasn't built just to show us where galaxies are."
