Heart failure means the heart can't pump blood effectively. Let's explore what truly happens inside the heart during heart failure. In systolic heart failure, the heart muscle, particularly the left ventricle, weakens and can't squeeze forcefully enough. This reduces the blood pushed out with each BA. As pressure builds in the left side of the heart, blood backs up into the logs. This causes fluid to leak into the airpaces, leading to shortness of breath and pulmonary congestion. When the right side of the heart weakens, blood returning from the body slows down, causing fluid to build up. This leads to swelling in the legs, ankles, and abdomen. The body attempts to compensate by activating hormones that make the heart beat faster and retain salt and water. However, these mechanisms worsen the strain, leading to a downward cycle. Modern treatments, including medications and lifestyle changes, can significantly slow progression and improve quality of life. The primary goal is to help the heart function more efficiently. Heart failure is a chronic condition, but with early detection, consistent treatment, and diligent management, many individuals can lead full and active lies.
