More than 4 thousand years ago, one ruler did something no one had done before. He built what historians consider the world's first empire. His name was Sargon of Aad. From a powerful city in Mesopotamia, he began conquering neighboring kingdoms. His armies swept across Mesopotamia, defeating rival city-states and bringing them under one powerful rule. At its height, the Acadian Empire stretched across a huge part of Mesopotamia, connecting different peoples under one administration. Sargon created a model of centralized imperial power that would influence Mesopotamian rulers for centuries, but the empire eventually collapsed and the city of Ade itself vanished. Today, archaeologists still don't know exactly where it was.
