Stretching across the arid plains of southern Peru are the NASA lines, enormous geoglyphs depicting animals, humans, and abstract shapes. Created between 500 BCE and 500 CE, these figures can only be fully appreciated from the sky, raising questions about the techniques and purpose of their creators. The scale and precision of these drawings suggest a sophisticated understanding of geometry and surveying. Some figures stretch over 200 meters in length, carved by removing the reddish surface stones to reveal lighter soil beneath. Scholars have proposed various theories for the lion's purpose, astronomical calendars, sacred pathways, or messages to the gods. Others suggest they may have been used in ritual processions to invoke fertility or rainfall in the desert landscape.
