"Imagine traveling back to ancient times and trying to water your crops. If your fields are below the river, easy, just dig a channel and let gravity do the work. But what if your fields are uphill now? You're hauling buckets all day like it's your fulltime job. So you build a wooden trough and pull a bucket up with a rope better but painfully slow. Then you add more buckets. Now you carry more water, but congratulations. You've also invented back pain. So you borrow an idea from well pulleys. You install two large wheels and loop the rope around them. The water moves easier until the heavy wooden buckets keep getting stuck time for another upgrade. You replace them with lightwehe bamboo tubes. Now as you turn the wheel, the tubes climb uphill in a continuous loop. And automatically dump water into the fields much smarter, but your arms are still doing all the work. Then you look at the river and have a galaxy brain moment. Why not let the river do the turning, so you build a giant wooden water, attach bamboo tubes around its edge, and place it in the current. The flowing water spins the wheel day and night, lifting water into a channel and irrigating the fields automatically. Congratulations. You've just invented the waterwheel chain pump. "
