Hi, I am Dr. Ali, a cardiologist with three decades of clinical experience, continuing my series of lectures for patient education. These are for information only. You should always get medical advice from your own cardiologist. Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped. It doesn't mean that the heart has completely quit. The heart is actually struggling to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. This is heart failure. Because it's struggling to pump blood, fluid backs up. When fluid backs up in the lungs, you get shortness of breath, coughing. It's hard to breathe when you lie down flat. When fluid backs up in your legs and belly, you get swollen ankles, tight shoes, bloated stomach, loss of appetite. When you get these symptoms, you should consider calling your doctor. Rapid weight gain, fluid retention causes rapid weight gain, extreme fatigue, ordinary activities like walking upstairs, causes sudden exhaustion, waking up breathless. You need to sleep propped up on multiple pillows to breathe. In all these circumstances, call your doctor. If you're gasping for air at rest, you cannot catch your breath even while sitting perfectly still. You cannot talk without gasping. You have new or worsening chest pain. You fainted or have severe confusion. You should have an action plan for your heart. If you get swollen ankles, shoes feel tight, your sudden weight gain, you are tired from normal walking, you need extra pull-ups to sleep, call your doctor. If you are struggling to breathe at rest, your chest pain or pressure, you fainted or passed out, you have severe sudden confusion, call 911 or go to the ER. Listen to your when in doubt get it checked out thanks for watching more to follow
