So there's a study called Masala, the mediators of atherosclerosis in South Asians living in America. It has been running since 2010. It follows thousands of South Asian adults across six US cities and tracks their cardiovascular health over time. It is the most comprehensive long-term study of South Asian heart health that we ever have had conducted. And almost nobody in our community knows that it exists. Here is what it has found that matters most for us in our community. South Asians have higher rates of coronary artery calcification than other ethnic groups. This is even after adjusting for traditional risk factors. We have higher visceral fat at lower BMI. That's the body mass index. Lower protective HDL, remember that's the good cholesterol, higher triglycerides, earlier onset of insulin resistance, and critically, these differences persist even in South Asians who appear healthy by every standard clinical measure. The study has also found that psychosocial factors matter a lot. Discrimination, a culturative stress, and social isolation were all associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes. Your stress is not separate from your heart risk. Remember, I emphasize this a lot. It is part of it. What the Masala Study tells us is not that South Asians are destined for heart disease, but it tells us that the tools we use to assess and prevent it need to be built specifically for our community. And most of them currently and unfortunately are not. This is why this type of content that I make exists. I want you to follow because there is a lot more that's coming.
