Why did ancient Egyptians bury one clay pot inside another and pack sand between them? You see, desert temperatures make food spoil within hours. Yet Egyptians kept food cool for days using a pot and pot system. They placed a smaller glazed pot inside a larger unglazed clay pot, then filled the gap between them with wet sand. The outer pot was porous, allowing water to slowly seep through its walls. As the scorching desert heat hit the outer pot, the moisture evaporated instantly, pulling heat energy away from the entire system. This cooled the inner pot where food and water were stored safely. The inner pot stayed completely sealed and clean while the outer pot did all the cooling work.
