What's the five-year sponsorship bar rule? If you become a Canadian permanent resident or citizen after being sponsored by your spouse or partner, you can't then try to sponsor someone else as your spouse or partner within five years of gaining permanent resident status. This isn't to say that you have to stay married to your sponsor forever. After all, marriages sometimes break down. However, you'll need to wait at least five years before you yourself can file a Spells of Sponsorship application.
