Congrats on a great first week at this job. Here's your paycheck. Thanks so much. Wait, why does it say that some of my money is going towards CPP? What's that? That's the Canada Pension Plan. You contribute a portion of your paycheck towards it now and then when you retire it replaces part of your income. So basically I contribute money now and get that exact amount back when I'm older? Not quite. The money that everyone puts towards CPP actually gets invested by CPP Investments, which is an independent professional investment organization. The goal is to grow the money and get the best possible investment returns so that millions of Canadians have financial security and retirement. Their goal is to maximize long-term returns without taking too much risk. And the CPP goes through a review every three years to make sure it's financially sustainable for the long term. I saw the little use it when I retired. Exactly. Remember that the CPP is just a part of your retirement plan though. It's meant to cover some of your basic needs when you retire, but you still need to be saving and investing your own money in order to cover the rest. You can learn more about CPP investments and what's happening with your money here.
