This is paralysis. This is paresis. What's the difference? Paralysis is the complete loss of muscle movement in part of the body. It can result from nerve damage, spinal cord injury or certain medical conditions. Paresis is partial muscle weakness rather than complete loss of movement. This is a coma. This is a vegetative state. What's the difference? A coma is a state of prolonged unconsciousness in which a person cannot be awakened and shows no awareness of their surroundings. A vegetative state occurs when a person regains basic wakefulness, such as opening their eyes, but still lacks conscious awareness. This is benign hypertension. This is malignant hypertension. What's the difference? Benign hypertension refers to high blood pressure that develops gradually over time and may not cause immediate symptoms. Malignant hypertension is a severe and sudden rise in blood pressure that can rapidly damage organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys. This is pulmonary edema. This is pneumonia. What's the difference? Pulmonary edema occurs when fluid builds up inside the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. It is often caused by heart problems. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in the lungs and may fill them with fluid or pus.
