If you are riddled with guilt because you use AI and you know it's destroying the planet, I want to tell you about Thora AI because it is the most ethical option that I can find. Now, I know a lot of you are going to jump down my throat and say, don't use AI, you don't need it. But I am a realist. And if we can at least get people to move from the most cooked versions of AI to the least cooked, that is still a win. The most compelling thing about Thora AI to me is that it uses 94% less energy than alternatives like ChatGPT. They use an open source model that has 100 billion parameters, of which only 12 billion of them are activated at a time. In comparison, OpenAI's GPT-5 model has an estimated 3 to 5 trillion parameters, with all of them being activated simultaneously. Even for a simple prompt like Hi. And so a search through their system is the equivalent of 37 Google searches in terms of power usage. Meanwhile, a search through GPT-5 is the equivalent to 597 Google searches. Data in Thora is encrypted. They don't sell or analyze your data for profit. And there are no logs, tracking, or behavioral analysis when it comes to your queries. Plus data is stored in EU servers, and they are far better when it comes to data privacy laws than the US. A big green tick for me is that they are part of the Tech for Palestine incubator program. One of my major concerns with AI is that Israel is spending millions of dollars to flood the internet with pro-Israel propaganda, to manipulate the answers that come from large language models like ChatGPT. I've asked Thora a bunch of questions about Palestine, and I'm definitely getting much more accurate answers than I was getting out of other AI systems. I mean, the founders of Thora are Syrian engineers who have experienced displacement. They have experienced the impact of empire. So, of course, they're going to instill guardrails into their model to make sure that people are not being propagandized. What I recommend is that if you have a simple search, put it into a normal search engine, although boycott Google. And if you have a more complex search that might take you like 10 minutes to get to an answer, use Thora. It is by far the most ethical option that I can find when it comes to AI, and a huge step up from alternatives like ChatGPT and Gemini.
