Dopamine is the pleasure we're all transmitters. This feels good. I want more. So when you're in pain, you reach for the nicotine or the alcohol to calm you down or the sugar, shopping, gambling, internet gaming, social media, pornography. All of those are dopamine. They distract you from the pain. Chronic overstimulation of any neuron leads to neuronal cell death. Neuron doesn't want to die. So it's got a plan B. It's got a defense mechanism. It down regulates the dopamine receptor. What that means is that the response to the dopamine is going to be attenuated. It's going to be lessened. So what you end up with is more and more for less and less. That's what tolerance is. When the neurons do start to die, that's actually called addiction. Hostage brain is the addicted brain, the addicted to dopamine to modify the pain brain. And we're all in it.
