How is AI agent different than AI model? When we talk about AI model like Claude, Gemini, or GPT, they're actually just giant file of numbers, and these numbers are called weights. When you write your prompt, the text gets broken into tokens, and a huge number of mathematical calculations happen when these tokens pass through the model weights. And finally, you get the output as text. That's the whole thing model does. It takes input as text, and give text as output. Just to make sure it's crystal clear in your mind, I want to say that model cannot open a browser, can't run a command in your terminal. The model doesn't even remember what happened in previous chat conversation. Model is like your brain. It can do the thinking and the reasoning. But to do anything meaningful, your brain needs your body. You need hands, eyes, legs, to actually interact with the world. Similarly, if you want your AI model to actually take some actions in the outside world, the model actually needs a software that can do those actions on behalf of model. That's where an AI agent comes in. Let's take an example to make this concrete. You ask a coding agent to fix a bug in your code. The agent software sends the model your problem statement, plus the agent also shares a list of tools that model can use. For example, agent will say we can read the file, run a command, edit a file. The model doesn't run any command. The model sees that all these options are available. Model generates a tool call, basically telling the agent which commands to run. The agent code executes that command for real, captures the error output, and feeds the output back into the model. The model reads the error, and then asks agent to open some other file and do certain change. Around and around, one bug fix might take 20 model calls before the model finally fixes the bug. Notice that the model never touched your computer. The model only ever wrote what to be done, and the agent around it kept turning that text into actions. Basically, the brain and the body are separate products. Claude Opus is the model, the part doing the reasoning and thinking. and ClaudeCode is the coding agent wrapped around this model, so the model can read your files, run commands, edit code, check the result, and decide what to do next.
