SQL vs. NoSQL What's the difference? SQL stores data in tables with a strict schema, while NoSQL stores data in a schema-less format. Use SQL for relational data like bank transactions, and NoSQL for flexible data that needs to change like service logs. Authentication versus authorization. What's the difference? Authentication checks who you are, while authorization checks what you're allowed to do. Authentication checks things like your username and your password to log into an app, while authorization checks what pages and data that you're allowed to see. Monolith versus microservices. What's the difference? A monolith is when you throw all your features and services into one codebase, while microservices is when you split up these features into independent services and codebases. Use monoliths if you want simplicity and speed for an MVP, and use microservices for where you need to scale and have a very large team. Vertical scaling vs. horizontal scaling. What's the difference? Vertical scaling is using a server that is more powerful, while horizontal scaling is adding more machines to spread the load. Vertically scale your database to handle more CPU load, and horizontally scale your more traffic during a holiday rush. Synchronous vs. asynchronous. What's the difference? Synchronous means that you have to wait for a request to finish before continuing. Asynchronous means that you can send a request and then keep working. Use synchronous if you need to wait for the results, like authorizing a payment. Use asynchronous when you don't need to wait, like sending a welcome email after signing up.
