How to prepare for computer science at university. The first thing you need is a good laptop. This is for when you're writing code compiling programs and especially running virtual machines. Computer science requires you to download IDEs which is basically where you write code and run code. IDEs usually take up large amounts of RAM. If your course has a cybersecurity module, you'll need a large amount of storage to download virtual machines. I'd recommend at least 512 gigabytes of storage space, 16 gigabytes of RAM. Secondly, invest in your study space. Computer scientists are usually sat in their chairs for long periods of time trying to solve one bug of code. So you need a good solid, comfortable chair. A laptop stands so you're in eye line with your laptop. Become good at one object-orientated programming language. Every university course has a module called object-orientated programming. This usually means Python if you've never done a programming language before, but you can use Java or C++ or anything that's object-orientated. Use Leetcode, which are free online questions you can go through at different difficulties, easy, medium or hard, to get better. And secondly, once you become good at one programming language, the rest of it becomes easy. Just quickly understand the concept of data structures and algorithms. I'm not saying memorize data structures because there's so many different data structures out there. It'll become easy later in your coursework and also for job interviews. Apply for internships early. I'm sick of saying apply for internships. As second year and third year, the content gets heavier and you don't have as much free time. In computer science, the course is competitive as you know. This means go to careers fairs and apply for everything there and expect a higher rejection rate because it's a numbers game. Join your computer science society to get not only just free food, free bees, so you can put it on your CV so it looks good for future experiences. Understand what Git, GitHub and GitLab is as soon as possible. You're not going to get away without knowing what GIT is.
