His files were good enough for countries including Germany, Austria and Australia to take tax dodgers to court. Heinz Frommelt is a tax lawyer in Liechtenstein's. There was no request, for example, from Germany concerning keeper cases. They were able to prosecute them on the day that they had. Were any of those prosecutions successful? As far as I know, yes, in many cases. No transparency, no charges, no fines, no convictions. >> It doesn't add up to Senator Percy down. For six years he's tried to get information out of the CRA and reading between the lines of the blacked out responses, he believes CRA turned its back on a lot more tax revenue that could have been collected in Liechtenstein because some of the Canadian accounts are decades old. >> If the parents or grandparents are in an offshore account, it is passed under the children or grandchildren. So it's a family trust and all likelihood. So what you learn then from these documents is that these kinds of accounts can be passed down through generations without anyone knowing. Absolutely. And it also means it's intergenerational. This has not been going on for six years. It may have been going on for decades. So the loss of the Canadian Treasury could be massive. Needing more of that money to balance its budget, the Harper government is promising to get a lot more aggressive. From collecting barely 30 million dollars last year from tax cheats, it wants half a billion dollars next year. It's even set up a new snitch line to get international cheats.
