The basis of music lies within sounds, and how we define and categorize sounds, and their various qualities. So how do we do this? Let's talk about two of the arguably most important qualities of a musical sound, pitch and duration. Firstly, every musical sound can have a pitch, which indicates its frequency from high to low. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch and vice versa. As you may already know, pitch is communicated through a series of letters, specifically the first seven letters of the alphabet. A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. After G, we loop around back to A.
