This is a story of how I became a data scientist from a finance background and tripled my salary along the way. In 2019, I graduated with a finance degree and landed my first job as a financial analyst at a big four firm. That job was definitely what I was supposed to do, but two years in, I realized I actually hated finance. So I threw it all away to try and start from scratch and land a job in tech. At the time, I thought working in tech meant only engineering and coding roles. And without a background in tech and STEM, I thought making the pivot was going to be impossible. Spoiler alert, it was possible because I landed my first job in tech as a data analyst six months later and that became the stepping stone job for my next two jobs in data science afterward. The reason I was able to get my foot in the door was because I found the perfect balance between upscaling, applying and networking. Yeah. the technical skills that I needed for data analytics. Also covered the real world application part with a capstone project at the end, as well as the networking part with modules that are specifically dedicated to building portfolios and making them stand out to recruiters and hiring managers in the data space. I always recommend Coursera courses to anyone trying to land their first role in tech because of this balance between upscaling, application and networking that they teach. Coursera partners with over 350 leading universities and companies like Microsoft, Google and Adobe to make these courses. Whether you are just starting out or you are in the later stages of your tech career, you can access all of Coursera's 10,000+ programs to fit whatever career goals you have with Coursera+. I know I wouldn't be where I am today without that one faithful Coursera course I took four years ago.
