There are two major types of data, quantitative or numerical data and qualitative or categorical data. There are also two subcategories of each. Continuous and discrete are both types of quantitative numerical data. Continuous data can take on any value in an interval. Imagine measuring something with an infinitely precise ruler. Whereas discrete data takes on counts where you can have one, two, or three of something. Qualitative data has two subtypes, nominal and ordinal, where nominal gives a descriptive category, maybe green, yellow, or red marbles, whereas ordinal gives ordering to these categories as well, like first, second, or third place, gold, silver, or bronze.
