Hello, my name is Andrew Thangaraj. I'm a professor in the electrical engineering department and a coordinator for the BS program in data science and applications at IIT Madras. This new program that we've been running is in hybrid mode and allows people to pursue another degree along with this program simultaneously. Now, why would you do this? A lot of people are talking about AI as being the only thing for the future. You should only study that. Why do you want to study anything else? There's a question that a lot of people ask. But let me give you a bit of a warning and input on where I think AI is headed in the future. A lot of domains today use AI. It's true that chat GPT and large language models sort of dominate the proceedings. But you can look at interesting problems like protein folding in the area of biotechnology and biology, which actually also gets solved by AI. But then the AI that's used the people there who use AI smartly is very very very important. Now so many other areas where AI can potentially be used requires people like that. People who know the domain really well and also know the AI part really really well. Now that gives you a valuable opportunity isn't it? Supposing you go somewhere and do only AI then you are limited by not knowing the domain. Supposing you go somewhere do only domain, then you don't know AI. Now here is a wonderful opportunity. You can pursue the domain that you like. You may like mechanical engineering, you may like biotechnology, you may like electrical engineering. You pursue that in one degree and then simultaneously you can be part of our BS data science and applications program and learn the current and exciting ideas in AI. Who knows as you go forward, you may fuse the two together and solve non-trivial problems for all of society. Welcome to the BS program in Data Science and Applications. Thank you.
