This simple solution could transform greenhouses into power plants too, so they can grow food and generate clean energy in the same space. 3M has partnered with the Swiss startup Volteris to help greenhouse growers around the world reduce energy costs while growing more produce. They've created a special film that can split light waves in two, one to grow crops and one that creates solar energy. As light enters the greenhouse, these modules filter sunlight so that the red and blue light that plants like tomatoes and peppers use to grow is transmitted to the plants. And the green and near-infrared light from the sun that isn't useful for plants is captured by solar panels and used to generate electricity. Meaning you can produce clean energy to use in the greenhouse without affecting the growth of the plants, and they're also creating a version that can work in plastic greenhouses too. Who knew that a simple solution like this thin film that's been created by 3M could help so much? Tap like if you're a fan of this idea and follow along to hear more stories like this.
