No water connection, no electricity bills and no LPG cylinders. Say hi to one of India's greenest homes. Reva and Ranjan Malik's home in Bengaluru doesn't have a water connection but it has never faced a water scarcity even when the city had severe water crisis. Built using less than 5% cement, their home harvests over 50,000 litres of rain every year. Building a sustainable home isn't a rocket science. Says the eco-conscious couple who used mud from the construction site itself to build a sturdy structure. Everything else was sourced locally, bringing down the cost automatically. Thanks to a combination of mud terracotta and mangalore tiles, the home stays naturally cool. All summer long, no fans or AC needed. The couple also uses a terracotta and mangler tiles, the home stays naturally cool all summer long. No fans or AC needed. The couple also uses a terracotta fridge to store food in 8-10 degrees cooler temperatures. Using natural light during the day and oil lamps at night, the house doesn't need any electricity except to charge their EV. Food is cooked in solar cookers eliminating the need for LPG. Instead of bulky cupboards, clever storage boxes under sitting areas ensure optimum use of space. Best part, no grey water leaves the house. It's used to recharge the lush food gardens. The couple is now aiming for 100% energy self-sufficiency. Sustainability can save the planet and your pocket too. And it's way simpler than you think, they say. Love their incredible heart.
