This is just one example of an aquaponics system and put it simply it's a combination of aquaculture which is growing edible or ornamental fish and hydroponics which is growing plants soillessly. This is a closed-loop aquaponics system. We've got a tank of tilapia fish. Now their fish waste is being filtered down below which produces nitrates and that is being pumped into the plant beds on top. We've got some little pea shoots growing here. These guys naturally excrete ammonia through their gills which can be converted by the bacteria in this filter into nitrate and then those nitrates pump back up to the top. These plants then get to benefit from the nutrient rich water which they can absorb directly into their roots and then the rest just drips back down into the tank for the fish. So in this one system you get both fish and plots.
