They're easy to germinate, fast producing, and cleaner than what you can buy at the grocery store. Every now and then, lettuce at the store will get recalled for E. coli or bacterial infections, so growing your own greens is a great option. In a hydroponic environment, plants get everything they need, so maintenance is pretty straightforward. Keep the water tank full, add nutrients on a regular schedule, and turn on the lights for at least 15 hours a day. If you use a smart garden like these, they'll remind you when the water is low and also run the lights on a schedule for you. Make sure to keep the grow lights 4 to 6 inches above the plants. Too close and the leaves will burn too far away and the plants will strain upwards to reach the light and grow leggy. And finally just don't keep the lights on 24/7. Plants need sleep too. More light doesn't equal faster production.
