This 23-year-old earns 54,000 rupees per month with hydroponics, all because he picked farming over government and corporate jobs. Meet Sandeep Kannan from Tirupati. Right out of college, he abandoned conventional career choices and turned to sustainable farming. Research during the 2020 lockdown led him to hydroponics. He spent three months planting leafy vegetables on his terrace, using PVC pipes and providing necessary nutrients through water. He had his first harvest in November. When his father was diagnosed with super high sugar levels and advised a diet of chemical-free fresh food, Sandeep decided to upscale his project. With borrowed money, he set up a hydroponics farm on half an acre of land in Tana Palli. He launched a startup Vyavasai Bhoomi and started selling vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli. He started selling his produce at local markets and supermarkets. He even set up a home delivery system to cut off the middlemen. While finding a market for hydroponic vegetables was a hurdle, he's hoping to increase his earnings to Rs. 2 lakhs in the next few months. Son of a farmer, Sandeep takes pride in his choice of career.
