A coconut can cross an entire ocean and still grow into a new tree. On the outside, it is covered by a thick, fibrous husk that contains air spaces and helps it float. Beneath this husk is a hard, woody shell that acts like protective armor, shielding the seed inside from water and physical damage. When a coconut falls from a coastal palm and reaches the sea, waves and ocean currents can carry it far from where it started. Some may drift for weeks and travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. Eventually, a coconut can wash ashore on a distant tropical beach. If conditions are warm and moist enough, the protected seed can germinate and grow into a new coconut palm.
