Nicola Tesla built a tower designed to send electricity through the air for free to anyone on Earth. J.P. Morgan shut it down. In 1901, Tesla convinced Wall Street's biggest banker to fund a massive tower on Long Island. Officially, for wireless telegraph signals across the Atlantic. But Tesla's real ambition was bigger. Morgan pulled the funding. Tesla couldn't find another backer. The tower was demolished for scrap in 1917 and Tesla never built anything on that scale again.
