The CIA built the largest ship in the world and told everyone it was for deep sea mining. It wasn't. In 1968, a Soviet submarine called the K-129 sank in the Pacific Ocean. It went down with three nuclear warheads, classified missile technology, and the full set of Soviet cypher equipment on board. The Soviets searched for months and found nothing. The CIA found it first. The wreck was sitting three miles underwater. No one had ever attempted a recovery anywhere near that depth. So the CIA went to Howard Hughes, one of the most famous and secretive billionaires in America, and asked him to be their cover story. Hughes publicly announced a revolutionary deep sea mining project. The ship built to carry it out was called the Glomar Explorer. It took six years to design and build. The Soviets had no idea what it was. Soviet naval vessels actually sailed past it while it was sitting directly above their sunken submarine. In 1974, the claw mechanism lifted a section of the K-129. Part of it broke apart and fell back to the bottom. What they did recover included two nuclear torpedoes. The CIA kept it secret for over two decades.
