Do you know how much money you can make shipping 50,000 tons of logs from the United States to Vietnam? If a ship leaves from the US West Coast and sails straight across the Pacific, it takes about 20 days to reach Vietnam. Let's say the freight rate for one trip is $1.8 million. For a 50,000 ton log carrier like this, fuel consumption is about 30 tons a day. At around 660 per ton, fuel alone over 20 days comes out to nearly $400,000. Then add crew wages, food and supplies, insurance, port fees and loading costs. And that is another roughly $250,000. Since this route usually goes straight across the Pacific, it does not need to pass through the Panama Canal, which means there is no extra canal transit fee. So by the end of one voyage, the total cost is about $650,000. Take $1.8 million and subtract $650,000, and the actual profit left over is still about $1.15 million. So do you think shipping is really a fast way to make money?
