Never say, "I disagree." Listen carefully. The words you use the moment someone says something you don't believe are the difference between a conversation and a standoff. I disagree as a wall. It tells the other person they're wrong and you're right. And now there's nothing left to do but defend positions. Say instead, "I see this differently." That's not a wall. It's a door. It invites curiosity instead of defense. Because now you're not arguing over who's correct. You're comparing what each of you actually sees. Second, never say, "That's not true." Say, "That hasn't been my experience." You're not calling them a liar. You're offering a different data point and people can sit with a different data point far more easily than an accusation. Third, never say you're wrong about that. Say, I think there's more to it than that. It leaves room for both of you to still be partly right, which is usually closer to reality anyway. Fourth, never say, I don't understand why you you'd think that." Say, "Walk me through how you got there." One sounds like judgment. The other sounds like genuine interest. And genuine interest is what actually gets people to lower their guard. Fifth, never say, "You're missing the point." Say, "Let me try that a different way." It puts the burden on your explanation, not their understanding. Nobody gets defensive over your delivery the way they do over their own intelligence. Perspective creates connection. Positions create distance. The people who get hurt in hard conversations aren't the ones who argue best. They're the ones who make it easy to keep talking. Send this to someone who needs to hear it.
