So you're adding another story to the roof. How do you make sure the new column base is safe and sound? Start at the existing beam column joint on the floor below. First, chip off the surface layer and roughen up the column face. Then install mechanical anchor bolts all around the column. Put a steel plate on each side and tighten them down with nuts. At the bottom, weld those plates together to form a closed steel collar. Now move to the top face of the column, roughen that surface too and drill holes through the floor slab. Bend the new column rebar at a 1 to 6 slope, push it through the slab hole and lap weld the lower end to the steel plate with a lap equal to 5 times the bar diameter. Squeeze crack-filling adhesive into the gaps between the plates, then tie the column stirrups in place. At the beam column joint, run 4 L-shaped bars through and weld them into another stirrup. Brush a bonding agent onto the column surface for better grip. Finally, cover all the steel and rebar with polymer mortar. If the spacing between the new rebars at the top is too wide, add some extra 12 millimeter reinforcing bars, then tie the stirrups and pour concrete to complete the new column.
