When the voltage of a step-up transformer reaches near the breakdown level, the surrounding gas molecules start ionizing. The gas turns into a plasma state and an electrical spark creates across the terminals. A scaled-down version, the plasma globe needs to be handled very carefully. If a small copper foil is pasted on the dome, it attracts all the inner plasma toward it. Any flammable material can catch fire if it comes in contact with it. Outside the dome, plasma is strong enough to make a neon bulb glow. It can ionize mercury vapor inside a compact fluorescent bulb and make it glow. A glass ball filled with the noble gas krypton glows with a bluish light when it comes close to the plasma globe. Yet it is beautiful. It needs to be handled with care.
