Ideas in this flowchart

  • Plan the annual report project for L-Z Marketing's aerospace client
  • The agency must create the client's annual report
  • Tom Lawrence and Sally Zickle co-own L-Z Marketing, which has won the client
  • Tom's responsibilities
  • Develop the preliminary report design: 1 week
  • Set the type: 2 weeks
  • Print the report: 3 weeks
  • Sally's responsibilities
  • Meet with the client to review financial information: 2 days
  • Write the report copy: 3 weeks
  • Proofread the report: 3 days
  • Project scheduling constraints
  • Sally must review the client's financial information before writing the copy
  • Tom's design work and Sally's initial work can proceed in parallel
  • Tom cannot set the type until the design and Sally's report copy are finished
  • Sally must proofread the report before it goes to the printer
  • Printing follows the completion of proofreading
  • Use a critical path diagram because the project depends on task relationships and completion constraints
  • Critical path duration: 2 days + 3 weeks + 2 weeks + 3 days + 3 weeks
  • With no unforeseen delays, the project will take 45 working days, or 9 weeks

"Preparing for Tomorrow's Workplace Skills 1. Tom Lawrence and Sally Zickle are co-owners of L-Z Marketing, an advertising agency. Last week, they landed a major aerospace manufacturer as a client. The company wants the agency to create its annual report. Tom, who develops the art for the agency, needs about a week to develop the preliminary report design, another two weeks to set the type, and three weeks to get the report printed. Sally writes the material for the report and doesn’t need as much time: two days to meet with the client to review the company’s financial information and about three weeks to write the report copy. Of course, Tom can’t set type until Sally has finished writing the report. Sally will also need three days to proofread the report before it goes to the printer. Develop either a Gantt chart or a critical path diagram for Tom and Sally to use in scheduling the project. Explain why you chose the method you did. How long will it take Tom and Sally to finish the project if there are no unforeseen delays? (Resources, Systems)"
