Map Scale

Quantitative Problem Solving in Natural Resources / Geometry and Geography

"A map scale is a dimensionless proportion relating a distance on a map to the corresponding distance in the real world. The units may be chosen freely as long as the same units are used on both sides of the ratio, and the scale can also be expressed as a unit-specific statement such as one inch representing half a mile. Scaled representations are useful because they make objects and distances easier to measure or visualize."
