Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Subhorizons and Diagnostic Features
"A diagnostic horizon is a soil layer whose properties meet criteria used for classification. An epipedon is one or more contiguous surface layers with shared features, while an endopedon is one or more contiguous subsurface layers with shared features. These diagnostic features provide information that is not captured by the basic O, A, E, B, C, and R horizon designations."
