Polygon Areas
Quantitative Problem Solving in Natural Resources / Geometry and Geography
"An irregular polygon can be divided conceptually into trapezoids using the coordinate pairs of its vertices in a Cartesian system. The areas of the trapezoids are calculated and summed, with negative contributions helping remove areas outside the polygon when vertices are ordered consistently. This trapezoidal algorithm can be performed by hand but is more efficiently implemented in spreadsheets, programming environments, or GIS software."
