"Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is common in pregnancy and associated with maternal and fetal complications. The Hyperglycemia and Pregnancy Outcomes study (HAPO) demonstrated gestational hyperglycemia is associated with pre-eclampsia, premature delivery, babies born large for gestational age, need for interventional delivery, shoulder dystocia, birth injury, neonatal hypoglycemia and hyperbilirubinemia, and need for intensive neonatal care.1 In addition to lifestyle advice, insulin is commonly required for management. Given that the treatment window is short, early insulin initiation and titration are essential to quickly optimize glycemic control and reduce the risk for these maternal and fetal complications."
