Introduction to Soil Science / Parent Materials
"Parent material is the substance in which a soil develops, and its properties strongly influence the resulting soil profile. Depositional forces determine particle sorting, texture, drainage, fertility, and other characteristics. High-energy transporters such as ice tend to deposit unsorted materials, while lower-energy transporters such as water and wind tend to produce better-sorted deposits."
