Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Maps around the World
"The United States has unusually extensive and detailed public soil survey coverage, largely because of sustained federal investment in soil surveys and conservation. These maps provide interpretations for agriculture, construction, recreation, wildlife habitat, sanitation, and water management. Many countries have less complete coverage because of limited resources, discontinued survey programs, or limited public investment."
