What is panic disorder?

"Panic disorder is characterized by sudden attacks of terror accompanied by symptoms such as a pounding heart, sweating, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fear of losing control or dying. Attacks often peak within about ten minutes, but people may worry intensely between attacks and avoid places where one occurred. Panic disorder is treatable, although not everyone who experiences a panic attack develops the disorder."
