"Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event involving physical harm or the threat of harm. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, irritability, aggression, avoidance, sleep problems, and difficulty feeling close to others. Symptoms usually begin within several months but can emerge years later and may become chronic."
